On a Personal Note …
We note that ABS statistics show the median age at marriage for Aussie grooms [2007] was 31.6 and for brides 29.3 years. But those stats would have been dented if a recently reported marriage in Somalia had occurred here. The bride was 17 and the groom was [reportedly] 'only' 112 years old!
This prompted a straw-survey of our members. Not surprisingly none could match that age difference, our biggest was 36 years, but several could beat that age total. Four members reported having married couples whose combined ages totalled over 140 years, and the record went to the member who married a 77 year old groom to his bride aged 73. All said that these ceremonies were no less meaningful for those involved than if the couples had matched the median ages above.
And if you really want to know, two members reported having married 18 year olds, and the youngest reported age total for a couple was 41 years.
